How the two plans reward a new member

Audible's membership page offers the free month on both plans, but what you walk away with differs.

Standard is built around a monthly pick. You choose one audiobook a month from the whole collection — Amazon puts it at 900,000 titles — and listen to your picks while you remain a member. Podcasts are unlimited. Each month's pick is used within that month.

Premium, the plan Audible used to call Premium Plus, is built around a credit, and Audible's help centre says a title you get with a credit is yours to keep. Premium also opens the Plus Catalogue, a shelf of titles you can listen to without spending a credit, and member-only sales.

The Prime member's extra

On its Prime page Audible says an Amazon Prime customer chooses two free titles during the first 30-day trial and keeps both. The same rule has a limit, per Audible's help centre: someone who has already used the two-title trial is offered the Standard 30-day trial the next time.

Pick or credit?

The difference comes down to ownership. A Premium credit becomes a title in your library for good, which suits series listeners and people building a collection. A Standard pick is there to listen to while the membership runs, which suits someone who wants one new book a month.

Who it is built for

Audible fits the parts of the day spent moving or doing something with your hands — the commute, the drive, the gym, the washing-up. It suits people who would like to get through more books than they have time to sit and read, and people who enjoy performed audio: Audible lists full-cast productions alongside its standard narrations.

Starting the free month

The button on this page opens Audible's membership page on amazon.co.uk. Pick Try Standard Free or Try Premium Plus Free (Premium Plus being the plan's old name), sign in with your Amazon account and add a valid credit card. Then download the Audible app on iPhone or Android, or listen on an Alexa device, a compatible Fire tablet, a Kindle or Sonos, as Amazon lists them.

A first month, step by step

On day one, choose your first title with the free month's pick or credit (two titles if you have Prime) and start listening. Use the rest of the month to test how often you actually press play: on the commute, on a run, while cooking. Before day 30, decide whether one book a month on Standard or a credit a month on Premium fits the way you listen, or cancel and keep the title you bought with your credit.

Who can take the trial

Amazon's Audible page says a new member can take the trial if they have not had one in the previous 12 months on the same account or card, and that a valid card is needed.

Is there an Audible code?

Searches for "Audible promo code", "Audible discount code" and "Audible voucher" all lead back to the same thing: the free month is Audible's own new-member offer, applied on its membership page, with no code at all.

Annual plans and two credits a month

Beyond the two monthly plans, Audible's help centre lists a two-credit Premium plan for people who get through two books a month, and annual Premium memberships with 12 or 24 credits, which arrive all at once rather than month by month. Any title bought with a credit, on any of these plans, stays in your library for good. The free month for a new member is on the monthly plans; the annual options are there for when you know how much you listen.

How it sits next to Amazon's other listening options

Audible is not the only Amazon membership with audiobooks in it. Kindle Unlimited (£9.49 a month after 30 days free) includes thousands of audiobooks inside its eBook catalogue, and Amazon Music Unlimited gives eligible subscribers access to audiobooks from Audible's catalogue alongside 100 million songs. Audible's advantage is choice: a monthly pick or credit spent on anything in its whole collection, new releases and bestsellers included, rather than a borrowing shelf.

Stopping

You can end an Audible membership in any month from your account settings. Anything you got with a credit stays in your library; Audible's help centre lists what goes when you leave — member discounts, the Plus Catalogue and any credits not yet used.
