Voi's headline number is the smallest in our mobility sector — £2.50 to start — but it earns its place for one reason that matters more than the figure: coverage. Voi runs about two-thirds of England's rental e-scooter trials, very often as the only operator in a town. If you live somewhere Forest and Lime don't reach, Voi is frequently the only ride referral you can actually use.

The offer that works in your town

Where Forest is London-only and Lime concentrates on big cities, Voi is the operator of the smaller and mid-sized towns — across roughly 20+ UK locations. Its priority isn't the largest reward; it's being present where the others aren't. For a reader in a trial town, "the offer I can redeem" beats "the bigger offer I can't" every time, which is how a £2.50 joiner credit still earns a solid score on our table.

What you get

The new rider gets £2.50 in ride credit at sign-up, and the referrer gets £5 once the new rider completes their first paid trip. Both amounts come from Voi's in-app Invite friends screen — the primary source — while Voi's User Agreement confirms the structure (GBP credit, first-trip trigger, automatic in-app crediting) without fixing the amounts, which Voi can vary by city or campaign. So treat £2.50/£5 as the current figure and glance at your own app to confirm.

No code to type

Voi's referral has no short code. The link carries a long, opaque token, so the simplest path is to tap the link on the phone you'll ride with — the app opens or installs and attaches the referral automatically. (If you'd rather enter it manually, the User Agreement notes you can redeem under Free Rides → Redeem Code.) Where Voi operates

Voi Technology is a Stockholm company, founded in 2018, the first to launch shared e-scooters in Europe, now serving 8M+ riders and 300M+ cumulative rides. In the UK it covers DfT e-scooter trial areas and e-bike schemes — including London boroughs, Cambridge and, from late 2025, a Glasgow cycle-hire contract — and it reached its first full year of profitability in 2024. Coverage shifts as borough tenders change, so the in-app map is the source of truth.

The e-scooter rules

The legal framework is the same one that governs Lime's scooters. Renting an e-scooter requires you to be 18+ with a provisional UK driving licence (category Q), because scooters run only under the DfT trial (max 15.5 mph, road and cycle lanes only, no pavements). Voi provides third-party motor insurance on its scooters. Its rental e-bikes set a minimum age of 16 and need no licence. Many cities also offer reduced rates for students, NHS staff, over-65s and low-income riders.

What we checked

We verify this against Voi's in-app Invite friends screen and User Agreement (section 2.8 on referrals), re-checking monthly with a daily link test. Because the amounts live in-app and can vary by city, we say so plainly rather than presenting £2.50/£5 as fixed everywhere.
