When the first term runs out, VPN Plus renews at £67.08 a year whichever page you bought from. That makes the two-year plan the cheapest way in: the partner discount applies for the longest stretch.

Who is behind it

Proton AG is a Geneva company, started in 2014 by a group of scientists who had met at CERN. A crowdfunding round from more than 10,000 backers paid for the launch. Today Proton makes Mail, VPN, Drive, Pass, Calendar and more, and counts over 100 million users. It has no venture capital investors and describes its structure as non-profit, which it says keeps it free of takeover pressure.

The free tier

Unusually, Proton offers a free VPN that is not a trial: one device, a random choice of servers in 10 countries, medium speeds, and no adverts, no logs and no data cap. Upgrading to Plus buys choice of location, streaming, P2P, NetShield, the higher speed tier and nine more devices.

Evidence rather than promises

• Audits. Securitum inspects Proton's VPN servers on site each year. Its 2026 report, the fifth consecutive one, found no sign of logging of browsing, DNS queries, destinations, traffic contents or identifying connection data. Every report is public.
• Source code. All Proton VPN apps are open source.
• Court record. Proton says more than 400 legal requests have met the same answer: no logs exist to disclose.
• Jurisdiction. Swiss law, according to Proton, imposes no logging requirement on its VPN.
