Insurance that behaves like a club

Laka calls its members The Collective. Rather than charging everyone a fixed premium set a year in advance, Laka adds up the Collective's claims each month and shares the cost among members, up to a capped maximum for each person. You pay nothing upfront. Laka still runs the fraud checks any insurer does, and points out that every member has an interest in looking after their own bike, because claims are shared.

The practical upshot is a monthly bill that reflects what actually happened across the Collective, with a ceiling you know before you join, and no lump sum to find on day one.

Two levels of cover

Core is the dependable base: theft (at home and on the go, including mugging and theft from a vehicle, with your bike, gear and accessories replaced by the latest model) and third-party cycling liability if you cause an accident.

Complete is the full package. It adds crash and accidental damage, including deliberate damage by someone else, roadside recovery, and the option of licensed racing and worldwide travel for up to 120 consecutive days.

Both come with Laka's always-included extras: sportives, club rides and non-licence racing such as triathlon, gravel and time trials; £0 excess on bike claims; up to £200 towards a rental bike while a claim is settled; legal assistance to pursue an injury claim after an accident that was not your fault; and member discounts on locks, lights, navigation and nutrition.

Built to flex through the year

There is no 12-month contract. Laka's own rider stories show how members use that: a roadie on Complete for nine months, dropping to Core for a winter month and adding Travel and Racing for two summer months; a city commuter on Complete all year; an e-bike rider on Core for theft; a gravel rider switching cover on for adventures at home and abroad and back to Core theft cover the rest of the time; a mountain biker adding travel cover for a trip to the Alps; a triathlete on Complete with a 50% multi-bike discount on a second bike.

Before you start the quote

Laka's quote form is short, so have three things ready: your postcode, the type of each bike and what each one is worth, plus whether it is electric. Choose Core or Complete at the top, add a second or third bike with "Add another bike" (household bikes ridden by family members get 50% off), and leave clothing and accessories for later, because Laka lets you add them once the bike is covered. The form also shows an "Add Discount Code" box. You can leave it empty: the referral credit has already been attached by the link, and Laka's terms let a new member use one referral only.

Bikes Laka will insure

Mountain, folding, fixed-gear, city, cargo, cyclocross, hybrid, road, touring, BMX, gravel and fat bikes, with a simple yes or no on whether each is electric. Gear and accessories can be added after the bike.
